how to train a dog

1.Find the right breed

Any breed of dog can follow your set of commands like sit, stay, fetch, bark etc if trained correctly and punctually but if want to train a dog for search and rescue operations then you can not train breeds like Boxer, Bulldog, Pit bull and Pug because they have a short nose or snout and are less sensitive to smell. German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever and Belgian Malinois are best for search and rescue type. Similarly, Golden Retriever are perfect for guiding and therapy purpose.
So, you need to choose the right breed that will suit your purpose.

2.Start at right age

Dogs should be started to train at right age. To early or too late and your dog will not be able to grasp you commands. You can usually start training your dog when he is at the age of 9 to 11 weeks.

3.Use positive reinforcement techniques

Training a dog is tough and not rewarding at times. Your dog may not grasp your commands which can be very frustrating but you should not give up but train him regularly and patiently. You shouldn't shout at your dog or show your anger and frustration towards him. Never use any sticks for punishing instead use treats when he gets your command and Praise and encourage him when he gets the job done by using words like "Good job !!" or "Nice dog !!".

You can use positive reinforcement techniques like Clicker training for training you dogs.

4.Make a routine

Make a time table for training your dog and follow it strictly. It's better to train your dog in the morning or evening when they are hungry and are seeking for foods or treats. Training your dog after meals in full stomach may not be a good idea. Follow your schedule so your dog knows when its time to train and when its for meals rest or walks.

5.Keep it short and sweet.

Training period for dog should be around 10-15 minutes. They are very cooperative and playful at the beginning but later get distracted and shows disinterest. Once, your dog stops enjoying the training session do not force into him and leave him to rest. Remember Rome was not built in one day, so keep it short, sweet and consistent not long and boring.
